Get ready for improved business communication on WhatsApp with the implementation of the revised Meta Structure and Template Types, effective from June 1st, 2023.

  • Businesses will now be billed per 24-hour conversation, with rates varying based on conversation categories or individual messages.
  • The previous concept of Business-initiated conversations has been restructured into three distinct categories: utility, authentication, and marketing, each serving specific purposes on the WhatsApp Business Platform.
  • User-initiated conversations will be referred to as service conversations going forward.
  • These changes are effective immediately and aimed at enhancing the WhatsApp Business experience for both businesses and users.

Starting June 1, 2023, businesses can use template messages to initiate conversations, with the template category defining the conversation category.
Three customer opt-in required business-initiated conversation categories will be introduced as follows:

Conversations will be based on the template category. When a template is submitted, it opens a new conversation of that category and incurs the charge of that conversation category, unless the template is submitted during an open conversation of that category.

For example: If a utility conversation is open and within that conversation, a marketing template is submitted, then both charges will be charged from the business marketing + utility.

For User Initiated Conversation, the category defined is:
Service Conversations: Address customer inquiries and provide support through user-initiated conversations

  • If a business replies to a user with a template message or sends a template message in an open service conversation, a new conversation based on the template category is opened and charged accordingly.
  • Conversations/messages are charged based on the customer's country code.
